Setting up a dedicated writing space was one of my goals for 2021. Over the past few months I've debated sharing the "final" set up. However, it hasn't ever felt finished. As I'm adding another couple books to my shelf, I realized that it never will be. As long as there are new books to add to my shelf, this room will never be finished. So, I might as well write about it now!
My husband and I are lucky in that we own a house with more rooms than we need, so I was able to claim the tiny bedroom above the garage as my writing room. It holds 2 short billy bookcases, a writing desk with space for all my craft books, and comfortable chair. Along the other wall we squeezed in a couch that looks like a chaise, a wooden chest my grandfather made for me that holds all my old journals, and my oldest Plant Baby.
The window has a deep ledge that the previous homeowners installed for their dog to sit on (which I know by the amount of hair plastered to my arm when I made the mistake of leaning on it early into homeownership!) Sometimes when I can't write at the desk, all i have to do is rotate my chair to write from the ledge with the beautiful tree looming over the window.
I have all my craft books stacked on my writing desk, and all my genre fiction books organized on the bookshelves. I have two shelves of adult fantasy books, a shelf and a half of YA fantasy, half a shelf of sci-fi (although that half is filled to bursting, and will soon require a re-org), 2 shelves of romance and 2 shelves of mystery.
Having all my favorite books close to where I'm writing makes me happy. Sure, some days I zone out imagining my own book sitting alongside them someday. Someday we plan to move out of this house to be closer to family, and when we do we probably won't be able to keep this extra space. I'm determined to make the most of my little writing room while I have it. Overall, I'm so pleased with my little writing cave and can't wait to see what else I can create here.
