Reading as a Writer: Liquid Snakes

I picked up Liquid Snakes by Stephen Kearse from the library because the spine looked fairly sci-fi-esque. I've been reading a lot of reviews of new releases, and this book hadn't crossed my radar, which made it fun, a cool find.  This book followed a pair of CDC employees as they struggled to identify and stop an emerging public health crisis; while convincing the world that it was, in fact, a public health crisis. From what I've seen working in a different sector of federal healthcare, the portrayal of the system was spot on.  Every character in this book was a work of art, no matter how briefly they appeared for. They were compelling in ways that you couldn't anticipate.  Finally, this book asked compelling questions about what's worth living for, what's worth suffering, and who we ask to do that suffering. Occasionally a tough read, I'm glad I picked this one up.
